KIEV, Jan. 17 – Ukraine's Parliament has voted to allow the National Commission for Communications Regulation to restrict access to the Internet.
Some 235 MPs, a quorum being 226 votes, voted for the adoption of draft law No. 3879, registered in Parliament by MP Vadym Kolesnychenko of the governing Regions Party.
The bill foresees amendments to the law on telecommunications, expanding the NCCR's powers with the possibility of making decisions regarding the restriction of access of telecom operators' subscribers to Internet resources through which information is spread that is contrary to the law, or through which news agencies without state registration operate. The decision should be made on the basis of experts' conclusions that the distribution of such information contradicts the law.
