KIEV, Aug. 19 – Rapeseed planting in Ukraine remains economically justifiable, despite the fall in the prices of rapeseeds due to the record rapeseeds and soybean harvest this year, Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting Chairman Ihor Burakovsky said.
"The fall in the price of rapeseeds will result in the fact that some farmers in some EU countries [for example, in Germany, Hungary, Romania] will reduce production of the said crops, while in Ukraine it is more economically justifiable to plant rapeseeds than wheat even in the said economic conditions, as irrespective of the change in the price, income from one ton of rapeseeds is equal to income from two tons of wheat from a hectare," he told Interfax-Ukraine.
Burakovsky added that according to some estimates, Ukraine this year will be able to export around 2.2 million tons of rapeseeds, compared to over 1.4 million tons last year, most of which was sent to the EU.
