KIEV, Oct. 10 – The construction of the new Beskydsky railway tunnel in the Carpathians will start soon, due to which the capacity of the railways on transit goods transportation towards Western and Central Europe will grow.
According to State Railways Administration Ukrzaliznytsia, the Beskydsky tunnel was built in 1886 and has exhausted its service life. Due to deformation and the destruction of drainage systems groundwater gets into the tunnel, and in winter moisture turns into ice, threatening traffic safety. Trains pass through the tunnel at minimum speed. In addition, the one-way tunnel limits the capacity of the entire international transport corridor.
