KIEV, Sept. 12 – Germany's Kalzip (Koblenz) will build a roof for the new containment for Chernobyl nuclear power plant , and the cost of the additional shelter for reactor four of Chernobyl will grow to EUR 1.5 billion, the Izvestiya newspaper has reported.
German equipment for production of steel sheets has arrived in Ukraine. Production and assembly of sheeting for the new containment will start in late September. The assembly of the first segment of the arc carcass will be finished by that time. It will be assembled in sections on a construction site near the reactor. Then segments will be moved by rail to reactor four, which was destroyed by explosion in April 1986, the newspaper said.
"Tests were a decisive part for obtaining the order. Our hooked joint system [for joining steel sheets of roofs] turned out to be very safe. The main requirement was high level of safety of the construction. It is to prevent the leakage of radiation for at least 100 years and be resistant to earthquakes and tornados," Kalzip Firm Managing Director Jorg Schwall said.
