KIEV, April 19 - The All-Ukrainian Association of Car Importers and Dealers is preparing protests against a Trade Ministry recommendation to introduce a duty of 6.46% on cars with over one-liter engines, but no more than 1.5-liter engines, and a duty of 15.1% on cars with engines of over 2.2 liters, irrespective of their origin, for three years, said association Director General Oleh Nazarenko.
The report says that the recommendations of the Interagency Commission for International Trade were approved several days ago after an investigation into imports of cars over the period from 2008 to 2010 proving that the imports of cars affected the fall in manufacturing of domestic cars.
Nazarenko said that the ministry had already "been there, done that." He pointed to an extra charge of 13% on the imports duty that was in effect in 2009 and which was introduced at the initiative of car manufacturers.
