KIEV, March 30 – Ukraine’s international cooperation in the sphere of nuclear security will allow the country to develop its own nuclear technologies, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Andriy Kliuyev said while commenting on Ukraine's removal of highly enriched uranium.
According to the NSDC, highly enriched uranium was removed from Ukrainian scientific facilities to Russia over two years of partnership between Ukraine, the United States, Russia, Britain, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. As part of implementation of bilateral agreements with the United States, Ukraine received an equivalent amount of low enriched uranium and required equipment. Thank to this several Ukrainian institutes – namely Sevastopol National University of Nuclear Energy and Industry, Kiev Institute for Nuclear Research, and Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology – will be supplied with materials for their research.
Kliuyev stressed that the level of security at Ukrainian research and development centers will be improved due to cooperation between Ukraine and the United States.
