BRUSSELS, Feb. 23 – The European Commission has said that the Ukrainian gas transportation system is among the principal routes for the supply of Russian natural gas to Europe, and has called on Ukraine to develop a long-term strategy in this area.

"The Ukrainian Gas Transportation System is a major backbone of Russian gas deliveries to Europe. Ukraine's unique geographical position and capabilities with regard not only gas transit but also storage and production, also means that Ukraine can offer a great deal of flexibility as a gas transport route," European Commission Spokeswoman Marlene Holzner said in Brussels on Thursday.
