KIEV, June 26 - Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, speaking Friday at a trial for allegedly negotiating an unfavorable natural gas deal with Russia in 2009, accused Ukrainian leaders of planning to “surrender” gas pipelines to Gazprom.
The trial comes after months of investigation by prosecutors in which they claim Tymoshenko had exceeded her authority while ordering the signing in January 2009 of a 10-year agreement setting high gas prices for Ukraine.
The case is the first of three probes currently underway that are targeting Tymoshenko, now an opposition leader. The probes began shortly after she had lost presidential election to her rival Viktor Yanukovych in February 2010.
