KIEV, Feb. 10 – Any nuclear fuel supplied to Ukraine by Westinghouse could not be cheaper than the fuel made by Russia's OJSC TVEL, according to the former chairman of the state committee for nuclear energy, Mykhailo Umanets.
"[Westinghouse] uses Ukrainian-made uranium for fuel production, and the production cost of [our] uranium exceeds the prices on the global market. The uranium enrichment services are bought in Russia and it's likely that they do not differ from the price set in [Ukraine's] contract with TVEL," he said in a report released on Thursday.
The advantage of Westinghouse fuel to Russian fuel could only come through the cost of fabrication, the expert said.
