KIEV, Oct. 5 – Ukrainian rescuers are ready to assist Hungary respond to a toxic mud leak at an alumina plant.
"On the instruction of acting Emergencies Minister Mykhailo Bolotskykh, an operative group was formed that would calculate the forces which, if needed, would depart to Hungary to give assistance. The Hungarian government have not asked us [for help] yet," the Emergencies Ministry said on Tuesday.
At the moment, Hungarian rescuers are working in the emergency area. The ministry stressed that there was no threat to Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary, at about 1400 on Monday, 600,000 cubic meters of red mud poured out of a sludge reservoir of an alumina refinery in the Hungarian town of Ajka (400 km from the Ukrainian border) when its concrete walls collapsed.
