KIEV, July 15 – The government, pressed by the International Monetary Fund, scrapped massive state subsidies to the steel sector that had been in effect for 1.5 years, a government official said Thursday.

The subsidies, which included lower tariffs for railroad transportation and lower prices for power among others, were initiated by the previous government of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in November 2008.
