KIEV, April 27 – Thousands of protesters, smoke bombs and chicken eggs thrown in Parliament did not stop President Viktor Yanukovych’s majority from approving a controversial deal extending the Russian navy’s stay in Ukraine by 25 years.
The deal was ratified by 236 votes in the 450-seat Parliament, a narrow majority, further splitting Ukraine between those who favor integration with Europe and those seeking greater ties with Russia.
Opposition groups, who lost their battle in Parliament, vowed now to take the matter to the streets across Ukraine, pledging to continue to put pressure on the government.
