KIEV, April 22 – President Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday defended an agreement allowing Russia to extend by 25 years stationing of its naval force in Ukraine in exchange for lowering natural gas prices.

Yanukovych, who signed the agreement with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday, said the political deal was needed because the price of gas was prohibitively high.
