State blocking stakes may help DTEK control generators, analysts say
KIEV, March 21 – The retaining of blocking stakes (25% plus one share) during the privatization of electricity generating companies would narrow a circle of potential investors in Dniproenergo and Zakhidenergo to only one candidate – DTEK, the largest private vertically integrated energy holding, which would have a chance to expand its portfolio to a controlling stake. |
State Customs Service may be given powers to seize currency
KIEV, March 22 – The State Customs Service could be given powers to temporarily seize currency brought through the Ukrainian border if there is suspicion that the currency was to be used to carry out money laundering or finance terrorism. |

Zaporizhia Aluminum Combine to trim production facilities by 75%
ZAPORIZHIA, March 20 – The head of Zaporizhia regional state administration, Oleksandr Starukh, has sent a telegram to Ukrainian Prime Ministr Yulia Tymoshenko informing her that (ZAlK), the country's only aluminum smelter, is to trim its aluminum production facilities by 75%.

Production index for key sectors declines 29.9% in February
KIEV, March 20 – The fall in the production index in key sectors in February 2009 slowed to 29.9% year-on-year, the National Bank of Ukraine reported.
In February, the fall in the key sectors production index continued slightly slowed to 29.9% year-on-year, compared to 32% in January. |
Universal Bank to rename Eurobank EFG reflecting acquisition
KIEV, March 22 ??“ Universal Bank will soon be renamed Eurobank EFG, in line with the name of a Greek bank that had acquired the 99.34% stake in the Ukrainian bank for almost $50 million in March.
"The stockholders' meeting decided to change the bank's name from OJSC Universal bank into OJSC Eurobank EFG, and to increase the bank's statutory capital. |
