Ukraine more ready this time for world economy drop, says NBU advisor

KIEV, Aug. 25 – The possible worsening of the economic situation in the world would affect Ukraine, although the country would suffer less in a new crisis than two years ago, as today the country is better prepared for such a crisis, according to Valeriy Lytvytsky the head of the group of advisors to the governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.


Former top defense official ordered arrested for abusing position

KIEV, Aug. 25 – Pechersky District Court in Kiev has ordered the arrest of the former first deputy defense minister, Valeriy Ivaschenko, Yuriy Boichenko,the spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, said on Wednesday.


Actual Ukrainian wages decline 10% year-on-year in July 2009

KIEV, Aug. 26 - Actual year-on-year wages in Ukraine fell in July 2009 by 10%, while in July 2008 they grew by 6.2% year-over-year, the State Statistics Committee reported.

According to the committee, the average nominal wage in July 2009 grew by4.1% from July 2008 and by 1.4% from June 2009, to UAH 2,008.

Avlita stevedoring company to build cargo complex in Sevastopol

KIEV, Aug. 26 – Avlita stevedoring company is going to build a universal bulk cargo-handling complex in Sevastopol, including for handling coal.

The company's acting director general, Oleksandr Lahosha, told Interfax-Ukraine that the estimated annual capacity of the complex is 8.5 million tons, including 4 million tons of coal and 4.5 million tons of sand and crushed stone. The complex would handle vessels with tonnage of up to 140,000 tons and water draft of up to 16.5 meters (Cape Size).


Refinery output will be hit by rail tariff rise, says TNK-BP official

KIEV, Aug. 26 – A decree of the Transport and Communications Ministry increasing tariffs on railway cargo transshipments could lead to a stoppage of Ukrainian oil refineries, Dmytro Zverev, deputy director general of TNK-BP Commerce Ltd., told Interfax-Ukraine.


Kiev economic court to proceed with ZALK de-privatization case

KIEV/MOSCOW, Aug. 26 - The Kiev Economic Court will proceed with a case concerning the de-privatization of Zaporizhia Aluminum Combine (ZALK), the country's only aluminum smelter, which is owned by Oleg Deripaska's United Company RUSAL (UC RUSAL).
