SPF fines Bryansk plant for past-due Luhanskteplovoz payment

KIEV, Aug. 4 – Ukraine's State Property Fund on August 2 informed CJSC Bryansk engineering plant managing company in writing that it would impose a fine for a delay in payment for a 76% stake in OJSC Luhanskteplovoz that the plant bought at an auction on June 15.


Stirol suspends production of carbamide, ammonium nitrate and ammonia

KIEV, Aug. 3 - Stirol, a major Ukrainian chemicals company, has suspended the production of cabamide, ammonium nitrate and ammonia, Oleksandr Shatokhin, director of the company's Azotexport department, told Interfax.


Number of unprofitable Ukrainian banks increases in second quarter

KIEV, Aug. 3 – The number of unprofitable banks grew to 64 in Q2, up from 41 in the first quarter of 2009.

The National Bank of Ukraine reported that the overall net losses of Ukraine's banking system January through June were estimated at UAH 14.321 billion, including UAH 7.301 billion in the second quarter.


Major steel companies report further steel roll production decline

KIEV, Aug. 4 - Most of Ukraine's steel majors again reduced finished roll production considerably in January-July 2009, although the decline in the industry seems to be slowing slightly.

ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih (formerly Kryvorizhstal), the country's biggest steel mill, reduced finished roll production tentatively 35.5% year-on-year to 2.56 million tons, the company told Interfax.


EBRD $750m Naftogaz credit unlikely to be enough, analysts say

KIEV, Aug. 4 – The $750 million credit extended by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to Naftogaz Ukrayiny will settle the current problems of the state holding, but it is unlikely that it will satisfy its financial needs in full, according to experts polled by Interfax-Ukraine.

Andriy Herus, an analyst from Concorde Capital Investment Company, said that the size of the credit is large enough for the company's current activities, although it does not settle all of its problems.


EnergoAtom to select supplier for Khmelnytsky reactors 3 and 4

KIEV, Aug. 1 - EnergoAtom, the state-owned operator of all four Ukrainian nuclear power plants, by the end of August is to select the supplier of reactor facilities for reactor three and four of Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant at a tender, according to EnergoAtom President Yuriy Nedashkovsky.


France’s AXA Group to invest EUR20 million in insurance companies

KIEV, Aug. 1 - France's AXA Group plans to invest around EUR20 million in Vesko Insurance Company and Ukrainian Insurance Alliance (both based in Kiev), according to the chairman of the two companies, Philippe Wautelet.


Steel industry raises finished roll output by 4% through July 31

KIEV, Aug. 1 - Ukraine's steel industry raised finished roll output 4% to 21.741 million tons in January-July 2008 compared to the same period of 2007, the Industrial Policy Ministry told Interfax.
